I pulled the fuse and when starting to plug in the replacement there was a small sparking sound and the fuse blew.Sparked a bit, tiny wisp of smoke by the battery terminal/positive cable, melted a little bit of the terminal post.Horn honked and fan turned on for about a second.and I have no problem driving without it until I get it fixed.Īny thoughts or suggestions (other than don't be a dumbass and lose focus next time I change out a battery) would be greatly appreciated. I can't think of a scenario where the power steering would magically start working again. I'm also trying to determine if the car is OK to drive around until I figure out what happened to the power steering. I'm trying to think of anything electronic between the fuses for the power steering and the power steering pump. It's just strange that the display screen works for other things. I am guessing there is a short somewhere in the stereo - or maybe it is just toast - and that's why the 30A fuse keeps blowing when I plug it in. + Out of nowhere it started working again. Remote key fob wasn't locking/unlocking the doors and wasn't arming the alarm. + Checked 10A fuse for power steering with voltmeter - it's fine. + Checked 80A fuse for power steering with voltmeter - it's fine (EDIT: I am rechecking the 80A fuse just to be sure). Warning light for power steering is lit up on instrument cluster. This is the LED readout with the clock and AC/Heat information on it. + While the stereo doesn't work, the basic screen that is shared with the stereo works (it didn't at first). Hooked the battery back up and the second fuse immediately blew. I unhooked the battery and plugged in another 30A fuse. + I pulled the fuse and when starting to plug in the replacement there was a small sparking sound and the fuse blew. + Somehow the problem seems to have fixed itself. Tach and Speedometer would flip all the way to "max" before dropping back to "zero" when I first turned key to AUX position. I cut off the link and spliced in a 175A replacement (closest I could find to 150A). When I tried to turn the car over, there was only a "click" from under the hood. Here's what got screwed up and what I addressed: Sparked a bit, tiny wisp of smoke by the battery terminal/positive cable, melted a little bit of the terminal post. Horn honked and fan turned on for about a second. I accidentally hooked up the battery on my 2008 Mazda 3 2.3l backwards for less than a second (I realized my screw up immediately). But enough excuses, I f&$ked up so I'll own it. I was tired, it was cold and windy, the kids wanted daddy inside instead of under the hood, the pos/neg indicators are impossible to see, and despite changing out batteries dozens of times over the last 30 years I made a mistake. Well let me start off by saying I know I'm a complete moron for letting this happen.
